Better by Far é o oitavo album da banda inglesa Caravan. Dessa vez os elementos progressivos são deixados para trás e a banda abraça um estilo musical mais despretencioso e menos desafiante de vez. Apesar de apresentar um som mais comercial a banda não desaponta trazendo várias canções voltadas ao pop ricas na qualidade, alguns momentos lembram o antigo progressivo de canterbury como na excelente instrumental "The Last Unicorn".

Blind Dog at St. Dunstans tem um toque mais leve do que os discos antecessores do Caravan, mudando para músicas mais curtas e acessiveis. Essa mudança é devida em parte por Pye Hastings começar a ser o principal compositor escrevendo e cantando 8 de 9 músicas do disco. Outro motivo é novamente a saída de Dave Sinclair dos teclados sendo substituido por Jan Schelhaas, distanciando-se dos longos instrumentais liderados pelo orgão e se direcionando a partes menos complexas no piano e sintetizador.

Após o lançamento do álbum "Waterloo Lily", o tecladista Steve Miller abandona a banda e o baixista Richard Sinclair também a deixa para formar futuramente o Hatfield & The North. Insatisfeitos com a direção muito influenciada pelo jazz que o ultimo trabalho seguia a banda retorma ao um estilo similar as seus trabalhos anteriores optando por canções mais diretas lideradas pelo memorável vocal de Pie Hastings. Esse álbum também marca a volta de um David Sinclair mais discreto nos teclados e a estréia de Geoff Richardson na viola enriquecendo o som da banda. Apesar ter optado por algumas canções mais acessíveis o Caravan ainda mostra muita criatividade como nas faixas "Memory Lain, Hugh / Headloss" e em "A Hunting We Shall Go" acompanhada por uma orquestra.

Após o aclamado "In The Land Of Grey And Pink" algumas mudanças ocorrem no Caravan, o tecladista Dave Sinclair abandona a banda para formar o Matching Mole com Robert Wyatt, ex-Soft Machine, Steve Miller entra em seu lugar. Além de mudanças na formação, o som da banda também muda bruscamente, Caravan sempre teve fortes influências do jazz mas agora elas ficam bem mais explícitas no som da banda. As faixas mais longas "Nothing at all /It's coming soon / Nothing at all (reprise)" e a excelente "The love in your eye" mostram o quanto a banda ingressava no território do jazz, longas suites com varias improvisações, instrumentos de sopro e uma grande presença do baixo.

Com o término do Wilde Flowers, Richard Sinclair, David Sinclair, Pye Hastings e Richard Coughlan formam o Caravan, a outra parte do Wilde Flowers forma o renomado Soft Machine, assim inicia-se o estilo denominado "Canterbury Scene". Em seu debut o Caravan ainda tem um som voltado ao psicodélico mais comercial porém isso não interfere na qualidade do álbum que já tem amostras do estilo que iria caracterizar a banda mais tarde, exemplo é a faixa "Where but for Caravan would I be?".
